Obituary for Betty Freda Eleanor Greer

It is with deepest sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Betty Freda Eleanor Greer at home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Moncton, New Brunswick to Harry and Emma Greer. Betty is predeceased by her parents and sister Grace. She is survived by her spouse of 45 years, Diane McCharles, her sister Sharon, her daughters Nicolette (Cheryl) and Monique (Joyce), son Marcel (Janice) and four grandsons, Mackenzie, Matthew, Cameron and Justin.

Betty had a passion for the printed word and loved to read both books and newspapers. This passion filled her working hours at The Calgary Herald, Vancouver Sun and Ogilvie Printing.

Betty loved her family, friends and fur-babies. She enjoyed laughter and lived life to the fullest. It was not unusual to see her riding her bike, playing ball or skipping with the neighbourhood children. She loved movies, music and singing her favourite old country and gospel songs. She also enjoyed travel and drove across Canada and the United States many times with her family. She toured Eastern and Southern Europe and Curacao as well.

Betty was very active in her community. She taught Sunday School and was a leader in her children’s Junior Forest Wardens troop. Betty was a close friend of Bill W for over 44 years and together they helped hundreds in Calgary, Vancouver and Sooke. She was a proud military mother of two veterans who served a combined total of over 65 years.

We wish to thank Sooke Hospice Society and Island Health Home Support Services for their wonderful kindness and care.

There will be a service honouring Betty at Sooke Baptist Church on Saturday, the 15th of January at 2pm, which will also be live-streamed on Facebook Live

In lieu of flowers, donations to Sooke Hospice Society or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
