Obituary for Doug Anderson

Doug Anderson was born in Sidney, BC on November 11, 1949. At the age of 15, Doug left school and home to begin his working life in Victoria, Edmonton and Manning Park.

Doug married Kathy in 1974 and son Jordan was born on July 7, 1975. They settled in Houston where Doug worked as a carpenter for RCA Construction, owned his own business installing cabinets and siding, then worked as a carpenter at Equity Silver Mine (1980-1986) and School District #54 schools in Smithers and Houston from 1986-2005, when he took early retirement.

During this time, Doug built and contributed to the construction of numerous homes and buildings in Houston, including draughting the plans for the Sikh Temple. He also built furniture, much of which can still be seen in the Smithers and Houston public libraries. When he wasn’t working Doug could usually be found with his fly rod on the Morice or Kispiox Rivers.

Doug then worked at seasonal and temporary jobs around the province while calling Smithers and then Grand Forks home until 2009. Doug & Kathy then relocated to Victoria, BC to be close to Jordan and grandkids Trix (born 2005) and Eli (born 2007). His last job in Victoria was as head scenic carpenter at a local theatre. Doug finally fully retired in 2013, buying a house with son Jordan and beginning extensive renovations to create a comfortable home for the family.

Doug was diagnosed with a fibrosing lung disease in 2015, but continued to work on the home renovations in spite of his breathing difficulties. In late 2020 his disease had progressed to the point where he was no longer able to do physical work. Doug fought hard against the disease, not wanting to give in, but lost that fight on January 20, 2022.

Doug is survived by 6 of his 8 brothers and sisters, and nieces and nephews and their families. And by Kathy, Jordan, Trix and Eli who will dearly miss his extensive knowledge and abilities, his wry humour and the love he had for us.
