Obituary for James Alexander "Jim" Munro

James Alexander Munro September 22, 1953 - August 2, 2022

With great sorrow the family of James Alexander Munro, Chemainus, announce his untimely passing at the Cowichan District Hospital following a devastating 8 week illness. Jim is predeceased by his parents Alex and Ruth Munro and survived by daughters Ramsey and Kelsey Munro, Shawnigan, son Trevor, Campbell River and granddaughter Faith (5) Shawnigan, his siblings: Zulis, Deb (Gary), Craig (Brenda) and many cousins in BC, Alta, Nova Scotia and the US. His many friends also will mourn him. Jim was especially grateful to his friend Ian for the caring friendship they shared these recent years.

Jim grew up in Cumberland, BC with a love for nature and adventure. He was curious and daring which got him into ‘hot spots’ at times. Jim was kind, bright, creative, humorous, loved music and was particularly sensitive to those in pain or poorly treated. He would often bring home friends for our mum to nurture and care for. Jim went to live with sister Zulis in Vancouver to complete the last two years of high school and excelled academically. He graduated from Kitsilano High, was popular and enjoyed the track team.
Following graduation Jim travelled to Eastern Canada for a few months, then returned to Vancouver Island, finding work in the Logging industry. He met his love Noelleen and they were married in 1975. They took up residence in Woss Lake, BC, established a home and enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting, camping and were active in community and family events. They were blessed with two girls, Ramsey and Kelsey.
Jim became a Grapple-Yarder Engineer and excelled at his work. He had a keen interest in automotive and heavy equipment mechanics since childhood. He loved his machines. Jim’s quick intelligence and intuition detected irregularities with the corporate employer and he became an IWA steward. He was at times outspoken despite knowing there would be repercussions. He was determined to stand strong for the working man and for nature.

Jim and Noelleen’s relationship came to an end. He continued on with his forestry work then in 1997 married Christa Edgar and were blessed with a son, Trevor. They separated in 1999. Jim maintained an active bond with his girls, parents and siblings throughout the years. His generosity saw him surprising his mother upon her retirement, and friend, with a return trip to Hawaii. As Trevor reached his teen years, Jim and he forged a bond.

With more that 35 years of operating heavy equipment Jim’s body and mobility took a beating, so he retired early and poured his love and ability into helping others in all areas of his life. He moved to Chemainus to be closer to his girls and was elated when Faith was born. Jim treasured his family and as a ‘jack of all trades’ who could fix most things, he helped his girls, sister and so many others when he could. Whether plumbing, electrical, automotive or constructing decks and sheds at the drop of a hat, Jim would be there to help us all. Jim was also a great cook treating many to his imaginative dishes. He remained generous, kind, proud, humorous and grateful throughout his days.

Jim’s family thank Dr D. Philippson for his compassionate care and all care staff at the Cowichan Valley Hospital ICU. Special thanks to nurses: Charlene, Charmaine, and Julia. A private family Celebration will be held.

For those wishing to remember Jim, a donation to North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre.
