Obituary for Lorenzo Antonio Bouchard

Lorenzo Antonio Bouchard passed away peacefully on July 8, 2022 in Victoria, BC. He leaves behind his wife, Christine Monford, son, Nathan Monford de Bouchard (Edmonton, AB), sister-in-law and brother-in-law Janice and Jeff Ross and their family (Kamloops), cousins Raymond and Elaine Thibault and their family (Calgary, AB) and Claire Chalifour (Chitek Lake, SK).

Lorenzo was born April 2, 1936 and was raised in Leoville, SK. His father, Alfred (Freddy), owned a pool hall, barber shop & general store where Lorenzo worked as a young boy. His mother, Gilberte (Gibby, nee Thibault) was a school teacher. Lorenzo left home to work in Prince Albert, then Regina and Dawson Creek. As a young man, he had adventures in many places before settling in Vancouver where he worked in a steel mill and took up Judo, which he loved. He set off for Tokyo in 1963 to train for the Olympics but was injured and was taught Japanese touch healing and Tai Chi instead. He returned 2 years later to Vancouver with his first wife, Miyo, with whom he had two sons, Victor and Normand.

He then spent 11 years crab fishing on the BC coast. He met his second wife, Christine, when they were both volunteers for an environmental group. He worked many jobs but often enjoyed the freedom of driving a cab and meeting people from many walks of life. Lorenzo was passionate about direct democracy: citizens rights for initiative, referendum, recall and impeachment. In July 1994, when this legislation was passed in the BC Legislature, he and his son, Nathan, were presented in recognition of Lorenzo's work in bringing direct democracy into law.

He will be missed by his family and friends. No memorial service is planned at this time. Donations to the Salvation Army gratefully accepted.
