Obituary for Maurlice Elaine Austin

It's with much sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Maurlice, who passed away peacefully in Sooke BC on October 06, 2023.

Maurlice was the second child of Clarence and Anna Modien, born in Shaunavon Saskatchewan in 1935. The family moved from Simmie Saskatchewan to Dawson Creek, BC when she was 14 years old. Maurlice helped her mother with the cooking, baking and cleaning; she loved her mother dearly and was not afraid of hard work.

On October 24, 1952, at the age of 17 she married her childhood sweetheart Harry M Austin. They initially lived in Drumheller (where Cindy was born in 1954). The next move was to Stettler then Red Deer (where Hal was born in 1956). They lived in Golden, BC from 1957 to 1969; Kamloops, BC from 1969 to 2014 (where Kerrie was born in 1971) and lastly moved to Sooke, BC in 2014 to present. Last October they celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary. Maurlice cared for her husband and raised three children. She was a fantastic baker and kept an impeccable home. She grew a garden, loved to read and was a knitter. She
made afghans and slippers for her family; and beautiful baby sets for the Kamloops Hospital Auxiliary; while also volunteering at the Kamloops Hospital washing patient's hair.

Maurlice is survived by her husband, Harry Austin, daughter Cindy (Robert Pope), son Hal (Phyllis Przybylski) and daughter Kerrie (Dan Girodat). She is also survived by grandchildren David Pope (Genny Anderson), Daryl Pope (Cristine Pingol), Krista Millar (Chris Millar), Lisa White (David White) and David Girodat. She is survived by great grandchildren Hannah and Ashley Pope, James Millar; and Carter, Beckham and Vincent White.

She is predeceased by her parents Clarence and Anna Modien, her father and mother-in-law Thomas and Mable Austin and brothers Mel Modien and Duane Modien. She is also predeceased by 2 sisters-in-laws and 10 brothers-in-laws.

At Maurlice's request no funeral was held but the family had a private gathering at her home on October 20, 2023.

On behalf of mom, the family would like to express our sincere thanks to the doctors and staff at Sooke Hospice Society for the compassionate care they provided. Donations in memory of Maurlice may be made to The Canadian Cancer Society.
