Obituary for Wayne Linton Carter

Wayne Linton Carter
Born: June 19, 1941
Died: September 24, 2022

Wayne Linton Carter, born in Glenwood, Manitoba, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones, after a courageous battle with cancer at VGH in Victoria, BC on September 24, 2022.

Wayne enjoyed family activities, time spent with loved ones, travel, and prior to retirement, the variety of challenges and accomplishments in the Heritage BC field.

Wayne spent his early years growing up in Manitoba and as a young boy would spend summers out at his grandparents and uncle's family farm where he learned to drive a tractor at a young age, having many adventures with his cousins and two sisters.

In his youth, he enjoyed playing cricket and the Manitoba team won the Canadian Championship which was a great accomplishment as the team was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame.

Wayne attended Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He met and later married his high school sweetheart Marian (nee Dunning). They shared a love for music and choral singing which they continued to enjoy in their years together. They also were long standing members of the United Church where they participated in the church choir.

Wayne was always a loving partner and devoted father to their two children, Catherine and David. He always made time to attend dance recitals and band concerts and any other family oriented event their children were interested and involved in doing.

In 1981, the family moved to the West Coast and settled in Victoria, BC where Wayne and Marian continued to live together after 57 years of marriage until his death.

Wayne was Director of the Heritage Branch, Ministry of Small Business, Tourism and Culture, and Executive Officer of the BC Heritage Trust. Prior to that, he headed up both Tourism Development and Visitor Services Branches with Tourism BC. He spent 14 years with the Department of Economic Development and Tourism in Manitoba and 5 years in Freight and Passenger Sales with Canadian National Railways in Winnipeg. The latter certainly contributed to an interest in things "old" like stations and trains and perhaps that is why Wayne became the "contact" for steam powered trains like the famous Royal Hudson which he was involved in maintaining and operating for several years as Board Director and Secretary.

He had Clydesdale hay burners as well as three coal/oil burners at Fort Steele. Wayne assisted in the creation of and served on various "friends of" societies relative to historic sites throughout BC, and was an advisory member for the Office Admistrative Program, Camosun College, Provincial Tourist Advisory Council, Marketing Committee and was Chair for Canadian Travel Film Committee.

Wayne did a stint as a Scout leader, Treasurer, Chair of Finance and Board Chair for a heritage church in Victoria. In addition to both attending and presenting at several management and Executive Development courses, Wayne completed a program in Public Administration at the University of Manitoba and also the Executive Development Program in Tourism from Simon Fraser University.

Wayne was known for his friendly, positive outlook and his "can do" attitude with a radiant smile, he was always a sharp dressed gentleman.

Wayne adored his grandson Liam and they shared a passion for fancy cars. He loved a well polished and shiny car and took great pride in his Mercedes.

In his later years, he enjoyed a friendly round of golf with friends.

Wayne took the most pleasure in spending time with family and friends and during his illness, enjoyed many creative visits to connect during the pandemic. He was comforted by the family dog Lucy, who brought a smile to his face.

He leaves to mourn his loss, wife Marian, daughter Catherine, son David, grandson Liam, sister Audy and Bruce (brother in law), sister Carole and Gene (pre-deceased), niece Nancy and husband Mike, great-nieces Isabella and Savanah, niece Susan and husband Dwight, nephew Greg and wife Megan, great-nieces Audrey and Adele, nephew Stephen and wife Devon, nephew Michael and wife Marissa and great -nephews Carter and Griffin and many cousins and dear friends who have provided love and care over the years.

Special gratitude and thanks to Audy and Bruce for their support and generosity and to Carole and Susan and Nancy and Mike and family and Michael, Stephen and Devon for their support, care and visits during Wayne's illness. It was appreciated and valued by Wayne and his family.

Thanks to the care team at VGH hospital on the 7B floor for the palliative care Wayne received in his final days.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests making a donation to a charity of your choice or donate blood to the Canadian Blood Services in Wayne's honour.

A celebration of Wayne's wonderful life will be held at a later date.
